Poor little fishies...

With hubby back home and my week's work at an end, we decided to tackle the fish pond once again last weekend. Justin had already cleared the ice away earlier and with our flash lights, headlamps, net, bucket and tank prepared inside, we were ready to catch ourselves a fish or two.

We were told there had been five fish. After Justin removed some rocks and a large cinder block from the tank, we scooped this way and that looking for the fish while we shone the headlamp close to the murky water.
We found four fish, alive and looking beautiful.

We brought them inside, gave them some food and hoped for the best. They were beautiful fish. Big, shimmering, and all but one looked quite healthy. Due to their size, we discussed calling the pet store or putting in a classified ad to give away a few.

I haven't had fish in years, and it was nice just watching them swim about that evening. We covered about half the tank so they would feel like there was somewhere to hide, and figured we could decide what to do with them later.

But later never came. The next morning, Justin woke up and went to go check on the fish, and every single one of them had died. It was tragic. If we had left them in the pond, they would have eventually frozen to death. But a recent respite in the weather meant that would not have happened for at least a few more days. But I guess the stress was too much for their tiny little fishy hearts to handle.
So that's the devastating end to my fishy tale.

  1. Awwww....
I finally got a chance to add you to my links list and check out your blog again!

That story reminds me of one Steve tells me from time to time: When he lived in 100 Mile House, he went ice fishing and his family froze the large fish they caught. It was FROZEN SOLID before they decided to thaw it out in a sinkful of water the next day. Well! As it thawed out, it came back alive!!!! Much to his mom's complete shock. I guess because it's cold-blooded, it surived the freeze. Amazing.

  2. Ohhh... the poor fishies. That's too bad. I wonder if they would've survived the winter if they were left in there. You wouldn't think so, but after Rhonda's story... amazing.
